Mama Afrika Film Festival mission is to celebrate and showcase women in the arts. The mandate of the Festival is to:

The Festival screens short, student, long feature and documentary films made by, or about women from all over the world. All genres and lengths are accepted. Mama Afrika will also invite women experts to hold short film-relevant workshops.
The MAMA AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL 2018 festival theme is: Legendary Women.
The characters who inhabit our screen stories have the ability to shape who we are, who we aspire to be, and how we view the world around us. Cinema has an incredible power to influence and challenge constructed portrayals of womanhood yet we continue to see a narrow range of female interaction on film. This year MAMA AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL will therefore play a crucial role in providing a range of truthful depictions of women as change agents and screening examples of women on screen that are smart, resilient, and inspiring. The festival will provide an empowering journey to show the public, girls, women and young aspiring filmmakers that there can be an alternative to the limited and limiting female role models offered in mainstream media. In the words of Geena Davis “If she can see it, she can be it”.  As a runup to the festival we would like to feature and celebrate creative women who are daring to pursue their creative dreams
The MAMA AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL will be held in Nairobi. Mama Afrika Film Festival believes today’s film students lead to tomorrow’s world-renowned filmmakers. Daily screenings will be at the Multimedia University of Kenya, Kenyatta University and the Kenya Institute of Mass Communications.
The Festival theme nights will give our guests a cultural night celebrating films and culture and culinary delights of particular countries. The opening ceremony consists of artistic performances and a cocktail party. The closing ceremony is a gala event for presenting awards to filmmakers and, of course, there is a party. Those are already four parties! More are to be announced.

Apply Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships | Become A Fellow

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships are six month professional fellowships offered once a year to professional journalists from developing countries and emerging markets. Friendly Fellows work full time at U.S. host news organizations while developing their journalism skills.

Alfred Friendly Press Fellow Benefits:

Working and living in another country is a challenge that fellows not only overcome but embrace. The benefits are personal as well as professional.

Alfred Friendly Fellows learn to:

  • Improve skills in gathering information, interviewing and writing.
  • Add social perspective to business and political reporting.
  • Write more balanced news articles, more polished feature stories and more in-depth analytical pieces.
  • Improve written and spoken English.
  • Become more vigorous and confident journalists.
  • Gain insight into American culture, business and politics.

Participation process of Alfred Friendly Press Fellow.

Participation in the Friendly Fellowship enhances career development at home—future fellowships, promotions, new jobs, etc. Our fellows have gone on to become journalism leaders in their newsrooms and around the world.

During their time here, our fellows meet a wide range of journalists and newsmakers. Press Partners staff, Alfred and Jean Friendly Foundation Board members and the Friendly family are integral to the Friendly Fellowship experience. These personal ties last a lifetime.

Alfred Friendly Press Fellow Responsibilities:

  • The fellowship is a full-time training experience, and fellows are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and responsible manner.
  • Fellows work between 35 and 50 hours per week for their U.S. host news organizations.
  • Outside the newsroom, fellows are expected to give at least two talks in the community – at local schools, press clubs, community groups, etc.
  • Press Partners also requires fellows to maintain a fellowship blog, detailing both their personal and professional experiences.

Alfred Friendly Press Fellow Eligibility Requirements:

  • Journalists who are citizens of Muslim-majority countries;
  • Current full-time employment as a journalist for the news or editorial departments of independent newspapers, magazines, wire services, or online publications of general public interest;
  • At least three years of full-time professional experience as a journalist;
  • Early to mid-career status and between 25 and 35 years old;
  • A demonstrated personal commitment to a career in journalism;
  • Ability and desire to share what is learned on the fellowship with other journalists at home;
  • Endorsement from the management of the home news organization;
  • An excellent command of both written and spoken English as all activities are conducted in English.

Schedule:

  • In late March, fellows arrive in Columbia Missouri, for an orientation seminar to prepare them for the challenges of living and working in the United States.
  • A major component of the seminar is a refresher course in American journalism. After writing, reporting, and learning about style, ethics, libel and the culture of American newsrooms, fellows leave Missouri better prepared for their fellowship assignments.
  • A cross-cultural adaptation specialist who has worked with Alfred Friendly Fellows since 1984, discusses what fellows typically experience during their time in the United States and suggests strategies to handle the various levels of culture shock most fellows experience.
  • The remainder of the seminar is spent on professional, cultural and social activities in the United States. Following the orientation seminar, fellows travel to their host cities to begin their five-month assignments.
  • In July, fellows and Press Partners staff spend a week at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. They attend a three-day computer-assisted reporting course and an intensive three-day digital workshop. Fellows also spend a day working with our cultural adaptation specialist.
  • A final seminar reunites fellows in Columbia Missouri, at the end of August for debriefing, a cross-cultural re-adaptation seminar, a Training-the-Trainers session and their graduation ceremony.
