The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria now offers a LLM/MPhil (Sexual & Reproductive Rights in Africa) degree.

This two-year programme is offered as a blended learning course comprising of online interaction and residential block-weeks in Pretoria. Two contact sessions will be scheduled every year (four contact sessions over the period of two years).

Masters in Sexual & Reproductive Rights in Africa Scholarship 2018.

Goals of the programme:

The LLM/MPhil (Sexual & Reproductive Rights in Africa) has short-term as well as long-term goals. In the short-term, it aims to secure the following goals:
  • to equip the learner with knowledge and understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights from domestic, regional and global international perspectives
  • to equip the learner with research skills in sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • to equip the learner with advocacy skills for promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • to equip the learner with practical skills for securing the realization of  sexual and reproductive health and rights

The goals of the Master’s programme go beyond the mere enrichment of the learner. In the long-term, the LLM/MPhil Programme should yield to individuals, and communities in African region and beyond, tangible social benefits, including:
  • grooming of leaders with a capacity to influence the social transformation of societies
  • raising of public awareness about sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • increasing the public understanding of sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • enhancing the capacity of groups, networks or organisations that promote sexual and reproductive health and rights and related rights, including  the rights of women and sexual minorities
  • advancing the reproductive and sexual health and rights of individuals and communities
  • combating discrimination and stigma surrounding sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • influencing interventions in sexual and reproductive health and rights national and regional levels
  • influencing policy-making in sexual and reproductive health and rights at the national and regional levels

Who can apply Masters in Sexual & Reproductive Rights in Africa Scholarship 2018?

  • The LLM degree is open to individuals with a LLB degree or equivalent.
  • The MPhil degree is open to non-lawyers with at least an honours degree in an academic discipline relevant to sexual and reproductive rights in AfricaOR any other qualification in an academic discipline relevant to sexual and reproductive rights in Africa that allows admission to a master’s programme at the institution where the undergraduate qualification was obtained. If that qualification has duration of less than 4 years, substantial proven practical or professional experience in sexual and reproductive rights in Africa, subject to the discretion of the Dean, is further required.

Applicants must have excellent academic credentials and demonstrate human rights experience or interest. A maximum of fifteen students will be accepted for the 2018 academic year.

TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme Details:

  • TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowships are tenable in the departments, institutions and laboratories of the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for a minimum period of six (6) months to a maximum period of twelve months and are awarded to young scientists from developing countries (other than Malaysia) to enable them to pursue advanced research in the natural sciences.
  • UPM will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation and food.
  • The award of the fellowship is subject to obtaining in due course a final offer letter of admission from UPM that must be approved by the UPM University’s Committee. Upon receipt of the UPM-TWAS award letter from TWAS, candidates will need to contact in due course the UPM School of Graduate Studies to apply for the final offer letter. In case the application for the final offer letter of admission is not approved by UPM, this award will become null and void.
  • The language of instruction is English.

TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowship Eligibility:

Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:
  • be nationals of a developing country (other than Malaysia);
  • must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Malaysia or any developed country;
  • hold a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;
  • apply for the fellowship within four (4) years of having obtained a PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;
  • be regularly employed in a developing country (other than Malaysia) and hold a research assignment there;
  • Provide an official Acceptance letter. The guideline to obtain the Acceptance letter is available at the School of Graduate Studies, UPM website. The URL link to the website is http://www.sgs.upm.edu.my/content/preliminary_acceptance_letter_application_guideline-30899
  • Please note that the applicant must have already identified a potential host supervisor/professor in UPM before sending their request for an acceptance letter to the School of Graduate Studies, UPM.
  • The acceptance letter must come from the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, UPM only (and NOT from any other Head of Department or supervisors at UPM).
  • In contacting the Dean of the UPM School of Graduate Studies, the applicants mustaccompany their request for an acceptance letter with copy of their latest CV, a short write-up of research proposal (maximum 3 pages), a copy of the PhD certificate and the transcripts of each degree qualification starting from the BSc;
  • provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English;
  • provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;
  • not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;
  • be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
  • The deadline to apply is 31 August 2018.
  • Applicants should submit the acceptance letter (issued by the Dean of the UPM School of Graduate Studies) to TWAS, when applying or by the deadline at the latest. Without the acceptance letter, the application will not be considered for selection.
  • Applications for the TWAS-UPM Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme can ONLY be submitted via the online portal.
  • Applicants should be aware that they can apply for only one fellowship per year. With the exception of the Visiting Scientists programme, all other fellowship programmes offered by TWAS and OWSD are mutually exclusive.

Nigerian Government Scraps HND Certificate Reforms Rules for Polytechnics
The Nigerian Government has scrapped Award of HND Certificates by Polytechnics.

The decision was reached at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, on Wednesday where the approval of a comprehensive reform of Nigeria’s tertiary education system was made.

In effect, the award of HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.

Also, all the programmes currently being run by polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped.

Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.

The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

To kick-start the new policy, the nation’s two most prominent polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic – will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.

And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment.

With education being on the concurrent list, the states may wish to consolidate their tertiary institutions. But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education.

The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities.

The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, his ministry would, however, continue to license private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels.

He said, “There will be no more award of HND.

“After we have exhausted the current students under the programme, there will be no more award of HND. This means that there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes. And in addition, any programme that is not technical will be out of the polytechnics.

“About 70 per cent of polytechnic graduates are in the non-technical courses. It is going to be a rigorous implementation programme.”

A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately.

Adamu said, “The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place.

“The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education. Any higher qualifications by these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university. So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender.”

1. Candidates are to visit www.futa.edu.ng. Click on CCE Portal and PDS Application form to Create an account.

2. Login into your account with your Username and Password. Click on Payment to generate invoice for the application form.

3. Candidates are to pay application fee of Fifteen thousand naira (N15,000.00) excluding bank charges on e-transact in any bank on the e-transact platform.

4. Login to your account on-line to confirm payment and complete the on-line PDS application form.

5. Submit the Online application form and print out a copy of the Examination Schedule slip.
 
a. The application opens on Monday 4th June, 2018 and closes on Friday 21st September, 2018. All awaiting results candidates must upload their results on the www.futa.edu.ng on or before the closing date.
 
b. Entrance Examination will hold on Friday 28th September, 2018.

University of Benin (UNIBEN) is now selling application forms for admission into its various postgraduate programmes for the 2018/2019 academic session. UNIBEN postgraduate programmes lead to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters degree and Ph.D DEGREES.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to the University of Benin, UNIBEN postgraduate programmes admission for the 2017/2018 academic session. The postgraduate programmes lead to the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters degree and Ph.D in the various Faculties/Schools/Institutes of the University of Benin.

UNIBEN Postgraduate Admission Requirements.

I. A Candidate for postgraduate studies in the university of Benin must have   obtained at least five (5) credits in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents,) A credit pass in Maths and English is required.   

II. Four credits of Ordinary level plus OND (not pass), NCE, IJMB or Advance level passes.

III. A holder of a Pass (Degree/Diploma) is not qualified for admission into the    postgraduate programme of the University of Benin. In addition, all holders of 3rd class degree must possess PGD to be considered for admission into the Masters programmes.

IV. Candidates who obtained Masters degree but with Weighted Average Score (WAS) between 55.0-59% can only be considered for admission into the M.Phil programme in the first instance.

V. A candidate applying for the Ph.D in any programme of the University of Benin must have obtained a weighted average score of 60% or letter grade ‘B’ average in the Masters degree.

VI. A candidate applying for the PhD with a Master’s degree from any other University who in his/her Master’s study has not previously taken the compulsory courses or their equivalents similar to the ones in the University of Benin shall on admission be required to offer and pass such courses with a minimum of 60% or letter grade ‘B’.

VII. Only students who have the NYSC discharge, exemption or exclusion certificate can be allowed to clear into the different courses.

  • Candidates should request their former Universities/Institutions to forward their academic transcript(s) to the “Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies”, to reach him not later than 8 weeks from the date of this publication.

The General University Admission Requirements that apply uniformly across the faculties as well as the Specific Faculty Admission Requirements are displayed on the University websites: https://uniben.waeup.org or uniben.edu.

MODE OF STUDY.
Face to face contact at the JUPEB Study Centre, University of Benin,. Lectures will be conducted from 8am – 4pm, Monday to Friday.

NOTE: (i) Fill your Bio-Data correctly as no complaint about wrong bio-data will be entertained after submission. 


(ii) Candidates who upload wrong bio-data will be disqualified and forfeit application fee. 

(iii) Only coloured print out will be accepted. 

(iv) Print at least 4 copies of the University of Benin online registration form with complete passport size photograph printed in colour. 

(v) Candidates are to follow the application instructions very carefully and ensure they select the subject combinations relevant to their course of study

Admission Requirements.

Candidates seeking admission into the JUPEB Foundation Programmes must possess minimum of 5 credit passes in at least five (5) subjects at “O” Level, including English language and Mathematics at not more than 2 sittings in the GCE, SSCE (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB)
 

All the combinations shown in the table meet the entry requirements for direct admission into Degree Programmes in the University of Benin and other JUPEB affiliate Universities which include, OAU, UNILAG, UNN, UYO, FUTA, FUNAAB, UNIPORT etc.

DURATION OF PROGRAMME

The duration of the study is a minimum of one Academic Session of TWO SEMESTERS. It is strictly non-residential programme.

To qualify for the entrance examinations into the various Pre-Degree Studies, candidate must satisfy the stated general and specific requirements for admission.

Admission into various programmes shall be through entrance examination to be conducted on 25th of August, 2018 by 9 am at the Ugbowo campus of the University.

How to Apply UNIBEN JUPEB Pre-Degree Form.

Interested candidates are to purchase application forms online from the university web site www.uniben.edu with valid VERVE VISA OR MASTERCARD ATM BANK CARD from any commercial bank in Nigeria for the non-refundable application fee of fifteen thousand naira (N15,000.00) The fee excludes bank charges.

The application form must be correctly filled with all information required before submitting online and thereafter printed out.

  2. Click on the FOUNDATION PROGRAMME (JUPEB) APPLICATION 2018/2019 Link.
  3. Click on REGISTER FOR APPLICATION and fill out application after reading instructions on the page
  4. Upload a recent coloured passport size photograph (scanned, not more than 3 months old passport) with red background. Webcam photograph is not acceptable.
  5. Submit the online application form and print out a copy of the examination schedule slip which should have your user name and password.

All candidates are required to use valid e-mail addresses and telephone numbers.

Igbinedion University, Okada (IUO) has rescheduled the date for the commencement of second semester, 2017/2018 academic session examination. Igbinedion University 2nd semester exam was postponed to give room to all indebted students to complete their payments.

Arising from appeals and pleadings from students yet to pay requisite fees for the session, the University Management has magnanimously granted a rescheduling of the Second Semester 2017/2018 session’s Examination from Friday 8 th June to Friday 15 th June 2018.

All indebted students are enjoined to make full use of this opportunity to ensure full payments of all fees owed the University during the period, failing which defaulters will not be eligible to write the Second Semester Examinations beginning Friday 15 th June 2018.

Provost, Deans and Heads of Academic Departments are urged to monitor compliance with the rescheduling and ensure that students are properly cleared via appropriate Examination Clearance Forms.
